Makhetha Development Consultants was established in Johannesburg in June 1992, as a Civil Engineering Consultancy, Project Management and Community Development Company.
The company started as a partnership between Martha Makhetha Pr. Eng. and Seetella Makhetha Pr. Eng. In 2003 the Head Office of the company was moved to Port Elizabeth. New shareholders have joined the company bringing the total black ownership of the company to 84%.
In addition to providing consulting services for conventional civil engineering projects, the company specialises in implementation of community-based projects using labour intensive methods. It also has a focus on appropriate technology, especially in water supply and sanitation delivery.
The company has offices in Port Elizabeth, Richard s Bay and East London. It has a staff complement of about 35 (70% technical and 30% social and administrative).
The company has enjoyed steady growth and in August 2011, opened a sister company in Maseru, Lesotho to handle work in that country as part of its strategic expansion into the SADC region. While local capacity is being developed, the Lesotho company has access to all the resources and experience of the parent company.
In 2012 the company acquired a majority share in Makhetha Environmental Consultants, An environmental consulting company based In East London (South Africa). The company has very highly qualified and experienced staff in the fields, among others, of Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Authorisations, Compliance Monitoring and Evaluation and community involvement.
